The world cup is almost ready to kick off and I for one am very excited. Unfortunatly a number of my football hating friends are not and this will undoubtably cause a problem at some stage down the line when I have to watch the very crucial Ivory Coast v Serbia & Montenegro match (I am tipping the Ivory Coast to win this year but more on that later…)

Thankfully I have an answer to get them interested in all the games - the World Cup sticker challenge! The rules of the game are very simple; you buy three packets of Panini World Cup stickers (I got mine from the WHSmiths at Elephant and Castle) then from the 15 players you get (you get 5 stickers per packet) you pick the best team of 11 players availiable to you. If you get a team photo or badge you can pick any player from that country, if you get a stadium or a player who didn’t make the final world cup squad then your stuck!

The scoring couldn’t be easier, its all based on a game by game basis and the person with the most points at the end of the tournament wins!

Plus points

  • 10+ if your player plays any part in the match
  • 10+ if your player scores a goal
  • 5+ if your team keeps a clean sheet (and your player plays)
  • 2+ for every goal your team scores per match (and your player plays)

Minus points

  • -10 for a red card
  • -5 for a yellow card
  • -2 for every goal your team conceded in the match (if your player plays)

It really couldn’t be easier than that - with your team picked you and all your friends watch the games, note the scorers, note who played and have great fun at the person who got a team full of Iranians, Australians and Angolans! Equally you can radiate smug glee when your team of so-called no hopers manage to put up a fight and win!

I’d like to think everyone who reads this article may give it a go; its like fantasy football that everyone can play; the players you get are random but who you then pick is up to you! I hope that I can spread the word of the World Cup sticker challenge far and wide!
