The World Cup – my way

Old content alert!

Thanks very much for visiting my blog. Always happy to have people read my stuff but just thought I should point out this post is years old. If it's about technical stuff there is a possibility that it is no longer relevant, if it's a bug report/fix I'm hoping that it should now have been fixed.

Of course if this is what you're looking for and it does work then great, just don't say I didn't warn you...

England are going to win the World Cup; remember 1966; Rooney is better than Pele; we have the best midfield in the world…..FOR FECKS SAKE GIVE IT A REST!!!

What people seem to forget whenever we get excited about football is:

  • Rooney could very well not be match fit in time
  • We have Gary “Chuckle Brother Number 1″ Neville in defence
  • Sven’s safety first style and Rio Ferdinand is an accident waiting to happen
  • Brazil, Italy, Argentina, Holland, Germany and France

I do think this World Cup is going to be a goody though, there are lots of nice attacking teams and some fantastic individual players who should make just about everygame (Ecuador v Costa Rica aside) extremely watchable. I think my house mate may be in for a shock – I keep saying I am watching EVERY game and he thinks I am joking; let me tell you now I am not!!

Who’s going to win?!?

Aside from the obvious choice of Brazil I really think that this is going to be a really close one – off the top of my head I could say that Germany (on home soil), Argentina, Holland, France (Henry is due a really really good tournament), Spain or even England could all do well if they get the right draws and a bit of luck.

The dark horse(s)

One word – Africa!

I love the African teams and I strongly feel that one day one of them will win a world cup (if any one is wondering it is 9am here and I am as sober as a judge). They are very athletic, have lots of raw football potential and just play with a smile on their face – now if only they could make goalkeepers! My pick for the top this year was the Ivory Coast and I stil think they have got a very good chance. Unfortunatly they got put in the group of death but if they can qualify from that they can do anything! I’d also think Togo have got to be worth a punt, they are in a weak group and is Emmanuel Adeboyor can get his shooting boots on they should feel confident of beating Switzerland and South Korea (without the biased refs this year) to qualify from the group.

I also like the look of the Eastern European teams – Croatia, Czech Republic and Serbia and Montengro (my tip to be this years Greece but are unfortunatly grouped with the Ivory Coast) could all feel pretty confident of getting through the stages.

The whipping boys

Everyone loves a good thrashing on the football pitch and world cups do contain a number of teams who, though there is no doubt they are trying hard and doing their country proud, could play the best games of their lives but still loose! We do love them though!

My tip for the top would be Trinidad & Tobago – lets be honest they are going to love every minute of each game, which is good as I think England, Sweden and Paraguay are going to love it just as much! Other potential stinkers include: Angola, Iran (the two actually are in the same group!), Costa Rica, Switzerland (even though two of Arsenal’s own are in the defence) and Saudi Arabia.

Come on the Elephants!!! (for those without World Cup knowledge thats the Ivory Coast)

Really funny. I am from Asia and I would surely love to see Asian teams doing well. Last time, it was SOuth Korea who caught the attention of all.

I’m an aussie, and really thought you Poms would have a good chance to go all of the way. Hell, I’m even hoping you’ll do well.

Then I saw you’ve got Gary Neville at right back. Maybe one out of 5 passes he made against Paraguay hit the target. He’s about as world class as eddie the eagle was.

Sorry, but him and Ferdinand are going to leak like a sieve.

But I hope they prove me wrong.
